Accessibility Statement

This accessibility statement applies to the website of Museum Wiesbaden – Hessian State Museum of Art and Nature, available at museum-wiesbaden.de, in both German and English. It also covers the Online Collection, the events calendar and the ticket shop at tickets.museum-wiesbaden.de.

As a public sector body within the meaning of Directive (EU) 2016/2102, we strive to make our websites and mobile applications accessible in accordance with the Hessian Act on Equal Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities (HessBGG) and the Hessian Regulation on Accessible Information Technology (BITV HE 2019).

Information about accessibility within the museum building can be found on our Accessibility at the Museum page.

Compliance Status

The accessibility requirements are set out in Section 3, paragraphs 1 to 4, and Section 4 of BITV HE 2019, based on Section 14 of HessBGG.

Due to the accessibility barriers listed below, the website is partially compliant with these requirements.

This assessment is based on a self-evaluation carried out between 12 October 2026 and 17 October 2026.

A redesign of the website is planned for 2027/28, with accessibility intended to be a fundamental consideration. Until then, existing barriers will be addressed gradually wherever possible. Binding deadlines for individual improvements cannot currently be provided.

Non-accessible Content

Non-compliance with Section 3(1) BITV HE 2019

The following content and functions are currently not fully accessible.

Barrier: Page Structure and Navigation

Description:

  • There is no skip link allowing users to bypass the navigation and go directly to the main content. The main content is not consistently identified as a separate region.
  • Some pages lack a clear main heading, or heading levels are skipped.
  • Some links and buttons do not have accessible names that can be read by screen readers, including the logo and certain image links.
  • The expanded or collapsed state of menus and expandable sections is not always correctly communicated to assistive technologies.
  • Dialog windows, such as those used for newsletter subscriptions and press login, are not fully identified as dialogs.
  • Some links open new windows without prior indication. Certain link texts are not sufficiently descriptive when read out of context.

Measures: Improvements to page structure, navigation and the labelling of interactive elements will be considered as part of the website's ongoing technical development.

Timeline: Gradually, particularly as part of the planned website redesign in 2027/28.

Accessible alternative: If you have questions about content on the website, you can contact us by telephone or email.

Barrier: Keyboard Accessibility

Description:

  • Keyboard focus indicators are not consistently visible.
  • In the Online Collection, some objects can only be opened using a mouse. The detailed object view is not fully keyboard accessible.
  • Image enlargement functions and some older expandable sections cannot be fully operated using a keyboard.

Measures: Keyboard accessibility and the visibility of keyboard focus indicators are to be improved as part of ongoing technical development.

Timeline: Gradually, particularly as part of the planned website redesign in 2027/28.

Accessible alternative: We are happy to forward enquiries about collection objects to the relevant specialist departments.

Barrier: Display, Contrast and Text Enlargement

Description:

  • Some text and interface elements have insufficient colour contrast.
  • Text displayed over photographs, such as in the homepage slider and image banners, does not always have sufficient contrast.
  • When using the browser's zoom function, text does not consistently scale on larger screens.

Measures: Colour contrast, text display and scalability are to be improved as part of the website's further development.

Timeline: Gradually, particularly as part of the planned website redesign in 2027/28.

Accessible alternative: Text size can be adjusted using browser settings, insofar as the respective page layout supports this.

Barrier: Moving Content

Description:

  • The image slider on the homepage and sliders in the Education section advance automatically and do not provide a pause button.
  • Some videos and animations start automatically and cannot be paused, or can only be paused using a mouse.

Measures: Controls for moving content and support for system settings that reduce motion are to be improved.

Timeline: Gradually, particularly as part of the planned website redesign in 2027/28.

Accessible alternative: The content featured in the homepage slider can also be accessed through the regular website navigation.

Barrier: Images

Description: Some images have no alternative text or lack sufficiently descriptive alternative text. This includes object images in the Online Collection and partner logos.

Measures: Newer content modules in the content management system include fields for alternative text. When creating new pages, alternative text is added wherever the relevant input fields are available. A comprehensive retrospective update of the large number of existing images is currently not feasible due to limited staff capacity and technical restrictions in older content modules. Accessibility requirements will be taken into account during the planned website redesign.

Timeline: Ongoing for new pages; more comprehensive improvements as part of the planned website redesign in 2027/28.

Accessible alternative: If you have questions about image content, please contact us. Where necessary, we will forward your enquiry to the relevant departments.

Barrier: Video and Audio

Description:

  • Some videos do not have subtitles or captions.
  • Transcripts are not consistently available for video and audio content.
  • Embedded YouTube videos are sometimes displayed without visible playback controls.

Measures: Due to limited resources, it is currently not possible to retrospectively provide subtitles, captions and transcripts for all existing content. Accessibility requirements are to be considered when producing new content. The accessibility of embedded video controls is to be improved as part of ongoing technical development.

Timeline: Ongoing for new content; further technical improvements as part of the planned website redesign in 2027/28.

Accessible alternative: Upon request, we will provide a transcript of the relevant video or audio recording.

Barrier: Forms

Description:

  • Some form fields are not correctly labelled, including those in the Online Collection and the press portal.
  • Required fields are not always clearly identified.
  • Error messages are not consistently communicated to screen readers.
  • Autocomplete functions for personal information are not supported throughout the website.
  • Search results in the Online Collection are not automatically announced to screen reader users.

Measures: The accessibility of forms is to be improved as part of ongoing technical development. A revision of the press accreditation process is planned.

Timeline: Gradually, particularly as part of the planned website redesign in 2027/28.

Accessible alternative: Press materials can also be provided upon request without using the press portal. Enquiries about collection objects will be forwarded to the relevant departments.

Barrier: PDF Documents

Description: Many PDF documents are currently not fully accessible, including the museum orientation map, programme previews and press releases.

Measures: We are examining how PDF documents can be produced in an accessible format in the future. A member of staff has already attended relevant training. We cannot currently make a binding commitment regarding full implementation.

Timeline: A binding completion date cannot currently be provided.

Accessible alternative: Upon request, we will provide the contents of PDF documents in an accessible format.

Barrier: Language

Description:

  • Some text and interface elements on English-language pages are only available in German.
  • The language selector is labelled only with the abbreviations “DE” and “EN”.

Measures: Language identification and the translation of interface elements that are not yet available in English are to be improved.

Timeline: Gradually, particularly as part of the planned website redesign in 2027/28.

Accessible alternative: If you have questions about content on the website, you can contact us by telephone or email.

Non-compliance with Section 3(3) BITV HE 2019

Barrier: Easy-to-Read Language and German Sign Language

Description: The website currently lacks the required explanations of its content and navigation in Easy-to-Read Language and German Sign Language.

Measures: The required explanations are intended to be created and integrated as part of the planned website redesign.

Timeline: Expected in 2027/28, depending on the progress of the redesign project.

Additional service: The MuWi app already offers tours in Easy-to-Read Language and German Sign Language. These do not replace the explanations about the website that are still missing.

Disproportionate Burden

Not applicable.

Content Outside the Scope of the Legal Accessibility Requirements

Under the applicable legislation, certain types of content may be exempt from accessibility requirements. These may include:

Older documents: Documents published before 23 September 2018, provided they are not required for ongoing administrative procedures.

Older time-based media: Recordings of video and audio content published before 23 September 2020.

Third-party content: Content that is neither funded nor developed by Museum Wiesbaden and is not under its control.

If you have questions about the accessibility of specific content, please contact us.

Preparation and Review of This Statement

This statement was prepared on 6 November 2026 and last reviewed and updated editorially on 6 November 2026.

It is based on a technical self-evaluation conducted between 12 October 2026 and 17 October 2026. This included an examination of the website's source code, automated testing of 22 representative pages using the axe-core accessibility testing tool, and checks of individual functions in a web browser.

According to the technical assessment, accessibility barriers in the events calendar were addressed on 17 October 2026, particularly those relating to headings, alternative text, link text and expandable sections.
